Eh, I watched the first two episodes of Korra and honestly, even though the animation is great and the world is very rich, there's nothing to the story yet. The original series had stakes in the very first episode. Right now it's just like "Oh, there's like a bad guy or something but he hasn't done anything yet so here's some sports".

I mean, what's the main conflict here? Why does she need to learn all four powers? Wasn't the point of the Avatar or whatever to defeat the Fire Nation? What is her goal, and what will she gain when she reaches it?

Honestly, I think people are overreacting because it's a sequel to a successful series with good animation, but it's just a very pretty nothing.

If I remember correctly, the purpose of the Avatar is to keep some sort of physical and spiritual balance, and to do that he/she needs to know all four elements.

And besides, if the point was to simply defeat the fire nation, then why were there ever Avatars other than Aang?

Yeah, but... that's just it. What does that even mean? What happens if she doesn't learn all four? I don't know. I just think the story of the first series was more interesting.

I believe it was because bending is based on spirituality (or something like that). So by learning all four it means they are balanced and can deal with whatever life throws at them.
Plus it gives them a leg up on whatever conflict that avatar faces.

As for Korra itself, animation is good, yes. But I agree there's been little in the direction of plot. I mean, I know it will be about ending the nonbender revolt, but the revolt itself hasn't been shown to be anything other than a guy on a soapbox so far. Doesn't bother me too much, personally, but I tend to be passive about these things. I mean, I've probably only seen half of the entirety of the original Avatar, tops, but I still got through it fine.

I always thought the Avatar's role was to maintain balance in the world. If there is no conflict then I guess the Avatar is doing well. As for the conflict, I'd give it a few more episodes before real conflict occurs. I think the writers want to introduce the new characters first and then gradually put them into a conflict.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with there not being a massive conflict right off the bat. A lot of Avatar's episodes actually had nothing to do with the Fire Lord. The first season was basically a field trip with a side serving of HONOOOOOOOR.

I think Korra so far seems more character-driven than plot-driven. The main conflict here is that Korra is pretty hot-headed and doesn't know anything about being spiritual and all that, so she's going to have to deal with those issues over time.

Aang had strong plot AND character development, but I guess there's not as much you can do with a mini-series plot-wise.

Who knows, maybe instead of one big plot we'll see a lot of smaller plots. There was the introduction of the Anti-Benders, so that'll probably be the main focus, but maybe there will be things about the arena, or the individual crime rings, or the new police force (which I'd love to see more of)

True, but you at least knew what was going on. Right now all we've got is a revolt with a guy who has mysterious plans for the avatar. Firelords just wanted to take over the world.

And I don't think Korra is designed to have multiple seasons, was it?

I remember reading that Korra would have 26 episodes with an option to do more, so 2 seasons maybe. As for the conflict it's not bad to not know a villain's plan. I like a good mystery.

Yes, I know that Zuko dumped the mask into Lake Laogai but it would be awesome if someone wanted to bring back the legend and stir something up. Maybe he could be a vigilante or some kind of master thief. It would be pretty awesome.

Also, the new season of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is coming out this Sunday!

Watched some more of Cybersix, here's brief overview then my thoughts on it.
Cybersix was some female superhuman experiment by a former nazi. She escaped at some point and was thought dead. The Nazi sent his son to make plots to kill her (making him the villain in about every episode while his father cooks up monsters to fight her). The mutant-monster things dissolve into a vial of liquid that cybersix needs to survive when they die. Also Cybersix's civilian identity? male literature teacher.
My thoughts:
* Art and animation are fantastically done. it's really nice to watch and they get some cool shots. although some character designs look a little weird compared to what most people expect to see on a cartoon. A variant of stylism, I guess. Some of the people really look good too.
* The Plot, from what little has been revealed has its fair share of dark tones. It's reminds me a bit of Batman with the tragedy, even making some sympathetic monsters.
* Sound and music are what I'd call the worst, but they're not bad. There are a lot of loud, cartoony sound effects, but mostly used to mock the bratty kid. The theme is a bit catchy, and it's a very nice listen. A more subdued version is used a couple times during battle, but for me it creates a bit of a sound-video dissonance. oh well.

Really, from what I've seen this is a great show and if you want to watch something good, it's easy to find on youtube. Pity it only lasts 13 episodes.
Also, I've learned that it was based off an Argentinian comic, rights bought by canadians, who got Japan for animation and stuff...so might this count as an anime? :psyduck:

Rewatching Samurai Jack and discovering that there is a lot more looped animation and still frame shots than I remember
