Yeah I have to agree, it made me think of someone with Down's Syndrome. Changing the character to be incredibly klutzy and accident-prone is a lot better.

I've had people tell me that My Little Pony's fumbled a bit with heavy subjects before (an episode with bisons that was supposed to be a Native American allegory or somesuch), so it's nice to see they recognized this and changed it.

Oh man, I heard about the Derpy change on tumblr, but that is so much worse than what I had feared.
They no longer called her by name, they changed the voice, and her eyes are "fixed".

Fuck you Hasbro.
Fuck you oh so very much.

Check your facts, Wright.

Hasbro is still keeping the original voice and animation when it comes out on DVD.

It's Itunes who said that they would not sell that episode unless a revised version was made.

At least they're not changing it across the board. I'd be rustled if they kept it this way for the DVDs.

I don't understand why people were so upset about Derpy's voice. We've had tons of cartoon characters aimed at kids who were portrayed as stupid, if not mentally challenged (i.e: Ed from Ed Edd and Eddy, Billy from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, countless others) and nobody complained or whined about it. But ohhhh no, as soon as it's a girl acting dumb, it's immediately a big problem that has to be fixed.
And even if she was mentally challenged, like so many whiners claim she is made out to be, so what? How many times have we legitimately had a character that represented the "special" population? It would make me proud that we could have characters with disabilities and can openly talk about them. This could be the perfect opportunity to have an episode about kids with disabilities, to teach kids to respect those with developmental problems.

Because people get offended and complain over the stupidest things, Sandwich.

A lot of the time because they're self-centered enough to see it as a personal attack, a.k.a. Lindsey Lohan and the eTrade commercial.

Since this is a show aimed at kids, I don't think that they would think of Derpy as a person with Down's Syndrome. I don't think that they would even know what it means. I honestly didn't even think of her that way, and I just see the word "derp" as internet slang. I don't see the way she's acting as offensive, that's just who she is, because the fans pretty much created her character.

I like the new voice, it sounds more like her voice back when she said "muffins".

I don't think that was her? If I recall correctly the scene had multiple boners mouthing the word "muffins" at he same time.

Ah, here it is.

Yeah, there are at least two others saying it. Yet that could be her talking before they caught up with the fandom. But still, in my opinion the "new" voice is lackluster and bland.
And something to note: Apple was *most likely* the cause of all this. A few people complained, so Apple told Hasbro to take it down unless they fixed the "stereotype". Outside of this small incident, nothing is going to be changed in any other medium.

One of my friends made a huge wall of text about this whole thing and it sums up all the shit that went on pretty well.

http://whinyemobitch.tumblr.com/post/18 ... ils-derped

This fandom is fucking stupid and sometimes I don't know why I'm apart of it.

Then again I'm sure some Sonic fans say this everyday.

Edit: Oh, and I doubt Apple gives a shit about this whole drama. Hasbro most likely told them to take it down, because of this drama and the worst part of fandom not being able to behave and caused Hasbro to edit it. Also, I'm sure that DVD was made before this drama even started and they might end up reprinting it sometime in the future which WILL cause more drama.

im disgusted in you guys, really. way to not realize theres a difference in portraying a disabled person in a positive light and just having a really bad "durrrr lookit the retard" stereotype in a show that, unlike those other shows you mentioned, CLAIMS to be "progressive".

i fucking hate heretics

You know what, I'm not even going to bother arguing. Oracle, you look way too hard at things to find something to complain about when there's nothing there to complain about. And then you shut out any opinions that may counteract your own.

Frankly, I don't think this discussion needs to continue.
