So in Detective Comics #1, part of the New 52 reboot, it turns out that the Joker's face has been cut off by villainous surgeon.

What the fuck, DC. Way to attract new readers by mutilating one of your best known characters in the first issue, bodaciously.

I suppose it's something to do with readers being more acquainted with surgery than falling into acid, so therefore a horrifying but realistic surgical situation to them is more scary to them than something that might be considered slightly outlandish like his other origin.

His face got cut off after the whole acid thing, and they have a picture of the cut off face in detail on the last page of the issue. I have no clue why he'd want his face cut off, because he puts it on everything. His gadgets, his henchmen, etc. You could say that it's his... calling card.
