Yeah, I was on a mission trip down to Vidor, Texas (near Louisiana, way souh Texas) and it really sucks back there. It was one of the places hit by Ike. We did a bunch of demolition stuff down there, and it really just put things all in perspective. I haven't really paid much attention to natural disasters, but this really held my interest. It's just crazy to think that some of these people were still recovering from Bacon, and that this was just a fraction of the damage that Katrina caused. Wow. Discuss.

I don't think Ike was friends with Texas.

Ike's friends with Mother Nature, and she's fucking rustled at us. I expect nothing but tornadoes until we all die.

as was stated earlier, ike just really put things in perspective for me. i live on the central texas gulf coast, and this is second time we were spared from a major hurricane in the last few years (Bacon was the other one, originaly expected to destroy my hometown as well). it was very shocking to hear from friends and relatives in houston and the surrounding areas about the damage that was caused. it was a lot closer to home than Bacon was. everyone i talked to knew someone who was affected. and ike was felt so far north as well. it was strange to see that counties in north texas were under hurricane warnings. one of the reasons this was so sombering was because my hometown, victoria, has been undergoing a huge economic boom and reform for the past few years. it used to be one of the most dangerous places to live in the U.S. now we are doing so much better, and it really scared me that twice all our progress was threatened to be wiped out. we made it though fine in the end, but not everyone was as lucky.

I spent 5 months earlier this year rebuilding and building new houses down in Mississippi and Lousiana. The gulf coast of Mississippi in particular is still licking its wounds from Katrina. The damage that the Hurricane itself did to Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, and Gulfport was catastrophic. New Orleans was done in by the breaking levees, but because Mississippi was just northeast of the eye of the storm, it got the strongest winds and the most water. There are people still waiting for a house 3 years after the fact.
